Welcome to the Homeschool Unlocked podcast, the show that helps parents see homeschooling as a unique opportunity. Forget fear; you can inspire and guide your child. Homeschool Unlocked: it's not school, it's life.

Welcome to Homeschool Unlocked. We are so excited to be with you today because we're going to be talking about the power of a very simple word. That word is "no."

But anytime I look at my queen, I always say yes. I love you, baby. That is Monica Aviles.

My name is Jesus Aviles. We are Homeschool Unlocked, and we're going to share with you the power of "no." Whether you are curious about homeschooling, new to homeschooling, or a seasoned homeschool parent, the power of "no" can't be discussed enough.

Why? Homeschooling solves problems, right? If you've decided to homeschool, there are probably lists of things that you're hoping homeschooling will do. We're going to be covering ten items—some this episode, some next episode—that homeschooling and the power of "no" can handle, and I can't wait to let you know what those are.

Before we get started with that, let me ask you a true or false question. I'm ready; give it to me.

On August 14, 1935, the Social Security Act was signed into law in the U.S. True or false? This was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

True, that was part of the New Deal.

Okay, great, congratulations, honey. How did you know that?

Well, you know, if you've been a part of the homeschool law community, you know I've gone to college for a very long time. I think if I were to calculate the number of years I took college courses, it would total maybe 12 to 13 years.

My first four years, one of my degrees was in political science. So U.S. government, history, presidents—I kind of had to know that since I paid the bills for that.

Well, you know what? We won't get into it right now, but I will say that your story is very fascinating because from kindergarten to 12th grade, you were not a strong student academically. You made up for it in college. Better late than never.

Amen, and remember that when you homeschool.

Yes, that's correct. Some of us are late bloomers, okay.

But I love learning from you, babe. You definitely have the gift of teaching.

We're going to be unlocking the power of "no" because whether you are new or seasoned, it's very easy to operate with a stressed mentality. We want to help free you because you may actually be so used to feeling stressed that you will be stressed about not being stressed.

So, benefit number one of the power of "no": Within the homeschool setting, there is a reduction of stress and an improvement in health if you embrace it. If you're comfortable with this new freedom—

Right, some people aren't comfortable with that freedom.

This is why I say that. For those listening who are considering homeschooling, or who just got started, you may be used to looking at a calendar and seeing white space that the world tells you to fill. You have the opportunity to emphasize rest, going on walks, and stopping to smell the roses. Does that make you feel nervous? Are you excited about that? You have that opportunity by saying "no" to other things and "yes" to being able to relax and be less stressed.

We're not going to sugarcoat this. Homeschooling is work. There is rest and freedom found in "no" when you do things you see value in. Stress reduction and better health are fantastic.

In the process of saying "no," benefit number two: Time. You actually get that back. Where the world tells you to fill your calendar, you are now scratching out things either somebody else put or you put there due to a lack of organization and prioritization. You can create more space for what you truly value. Time management is priority management.

Scheduling can go crazy if you need to figure out time and space for sports, performing arts, projects, and getting stuff done. The power of "no" gives you flexibility, improves focus, and allows you to manage your schedule for peak performance.

The way you plan and prioritize involves spending time with God, in your Bible, walking, and journaling. What is valuable? What does God want you to prioritize? Look at your kids. They each have their unique strengths and weaknesses, and you have the opportunity to influence and shape them so they can excel in amazing ways according to how God made them.

At Homeschool Unlocked, we emphasize the relationships and the fruit found in homeschooling. When you decide to be the lead instructor and learn alongside your student, you understand professional development and growth. Homeschooling allows for family and personal growth, benefit number three of "no."

Family and personal growth: We're talking about relationships, bonds, and personal growth for you and your child. Setting aside nonsense and things of lesser importance.

What if you could help your children enter adulthood knowing their purpose, strengths, and weaknesses, without waiting until they are frustrated and burnt out? What if from a young age, you spend time getting to know them, helping them discover what God has for them to do?

We're not going to rush this. We'll stop here and ask you to listen to this episode again. We only gave you three reasons, none academic, but going slow allows you to design your homeschool experience.

Homeschooling is a beautiful thing. At Homeschool Unlocked, we believe there is treasure in homeschooling that people search for in many places. Homeschooling offers unique experiences and the power of "no" resolves many issues we face.

We promote homeschooling, equip those to homeschool, and make others aware of the benefits. We train to do it with excellence.

That's us, Homeschool Unlocked. Your homework: Listen to this again, think about it, write it down.
